Why Does IPL Hair Removal Take More Than One Visit?
Your hair has its own schedule. Unfortunately, it doesn't check yours.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if unwanted hair could disappear after just one IPL appointment?
One visit. Smooth skin. Goodbye, razor.
Wellโฆ your hair has other plans. ๐
The good news? There's a simple reason IPL hair removal takes several treatments. And once you understand it, the whole process makes much more sense.
Your Hair Doesn't Grow All at Once
Here's something surprising: not all your hair is growing at the same time.
Some hairs are actively growing. Others are resting, getting ready to grow, or naturally shedding.
Think of your hair follicles as employees working different shifts. Some are on duty, some are taking a break, and others apparently forgot to check the schedule.
IPL works best on hairs in their active growth stage, when light energy can be absorbed by pigment in the hair and converted into heat that affects the follicle.
But here's the catch: only some of your hairs are in that stage during any one appointment.
That's why we need more than one visit!
Why Can't We Just Treat Everything at Once?
Because we can't convince resting hairs to start growing on command.
(Trust me, that would make scheduling much easier!)
Each IPL appointment gives us another opportunity to treat hairs that have entered their active growth stage.
Over time, this can mean:
- Less unwanted hair
- Slower regrowth
- Finer hair in treated areas
- Less time spent shaving
The goal is less unwanted hair over time, not an overnight miracle.
Why Do We Wait Between Appointments?
You might be thinking, "If IPL works, why not come every week and finish faster?"
Great question!
The answer is simple: your hair needs time to move through its natural growth cycle.
Treating too frequently doesn't necessarily mean faster results.
And different body areas have different schedules. Facial hair, underarm hair, and leg hair don't all behave the same way.
That's why IPL appointments are spaced according to the treatment area and your individual response.
Sometimes patience really is part of the beauty routine.
Who knew?
Shaving Is Fine. Waxing? Not So Much.
Here's another little surprise.
Before IPL, shaving is usually recommended. But waxing, tweezing, and epilating are generally best avoided during your treatment series.
Why?
IPL needs pigment in the hair within the follicle to absorb its light energy.
Shaving leaves that hair structure beneath the skin. Waxing pulls it out.
So your razor can stay for now.
Don't worry. We're hoping you'll need it a lot less often later. ๐
What If My Hair Looks Patchy?
That's actually quite common during a treatment series.
You might notice one area getting smoother while another still has noticeable hair.
Remember those follicles working different shifts?
They're still not following the same schedule.
As your treatments continue, more hairs may respond, and the overall reduction can become more noticeable.
You may also see treated hairs appear to grow for a short time before shedding. That doesn't necessarily mean the treatment failed.
Does IPL Work for Everyone?
IPL generally works best when there's enough dark pigment in the hair to absorb the light.
Very light blond, white, gray, and some red hair can be difficult to treat effectively.
Skin tone matters too, because IPL energy can also be absorbed by pigment in the skin. A professional assessment helps determine whether IPL is appropriate and which settings can be used safely.
Results also vary depending on the treatment area, hormones, and individual hair growth.
That's why personalized treatment planning matters.
So, What's the Secret to Better Results?
It's not about using the strongest possible treatment or booking appointments as often as possible.
It's about good timing, the right treatment plan, and consistency.
Your hair may be stubborn, but understanding how it grows helps us work with it rather than against it.
And remember: your hair isn't necessarily ignoring IPL.
Some of it simply hasn't had its turn yet. ๐
